Windows 11 22H2 Upgrade using Configuration Manager (SCCM)

In this article I will show how to perform Windows 11 22H2 upgrade using SCCM. This is the latest version of windows 11. It is released on September 20, 2022.Here user can use windows servicing plans to keep windows 11 updated and secured. users who are running with windows 11 21h2, can upgrade with Windows 11 22H2 using windows update. ConfigMgr Servicing Plans are also used to learn how to upgrade to Windows 11 version 22H2. Widows 11 feature update release cycles are now set to one per year.so you have to perform Windows 11 upgrades once a year. 

Prerequisites

  • Hardware requirements

To install or upgrade to Windows 11, devices must meet the following minimum hardware requirements:
Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with two or more cores on a compatible 64-bit processor or system on a chip (SoC).
RAM: 4 gigabytes (GB) or greater.
Storage: 64 GB* or greater available storage is required to install Windows 11.
Extra storage space might be required to download updates and enable specific features.
Graphics card: Compatible with DirectX 12 or later, with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
System firmware: UEFI, Secure Boot capable.
TPM: Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0.
Display: High definition (720p) display, 9″ or greater monitor, 8 bits per color channel.
Internet connection: Internet connectivity is necessary to perform updates, and to download and use some features.
Windows 11 Home edition requires an Internet connection and a Microsoft Account to complete device setup on first use.

  • SCCM requirements

Use a supported WSUS version:
WSUS 10.0.14393, a role in Windows Server 2016
WSUS 10.0.17763, a role in Windows Server 2019
WSUS 6.3, a role in Windows Server 2012 R2. Also install KB 3095113 and KB 3159706 or later.
Configure the service connection point for Online, persistent connection mode. When the site is in offline mode, you don’t see data updates in the dashboard until you get Configuration Manager servicing update.
Configure and synchronize software updates. Before any Windows feature upgrades are available in the Configuration Manager console, select the Upgrades classification, and synchronize software updates.
Enable the configuration of the following client settings
Specify thread priority for feature updates
Enable Dynamic Update for feature updates

Locate Windows 11 22H2 Feature Update

Once prerequisites steps are completed, Go to Software Library -> Overview -> Windows Servicing -> All Windows Feature Updates and all windows 11 feature updates will be listed in console. Type “22H2” in search box to find the latest version Windows 11 22H2 updates and click Search. All Windows 11 22H2 updates will be available in the console. Select Windows 11 (business editions), version 22H2 en-us x64 update and proceed to download.

Download Windows 11 22H2 Feature Update

In the below steps we will see how to download and create a package for this update. In the Configuration Manager console, right-click on Windows 11 (business editions), version 22H2 en-us x64 and select download option. Create Deployment Package for Windows 11 22H2 Feature Update. Here we will be creating a deployment package for Windows 11 22H2 and this package will be deployed to the client computers for upgrade. 

On Deployment Package page, create a new deployment package, select Create a new deployment package on Download Software Updates wizard, Provide the package name as Windows 11 22H2 Feature Update. Provide the description. But it is optional. Provide the package source, specify the shared folder which stores the update files. Click next to continue.

On Distribution Point page, Click Add button to specify the distribution points or distribution point group. Click Next.

On Distribution Point Settings page, leave the settings to default on Distribution Settings page and click Next.

On Download location page, Select Download software updates from the internet and click Next.

On select the update languages for products page, you have to specify the updated languages for products. Edit button can be used to select different languages. leave this page as default and click Next. We have successfully downloaded Windows 11 22H2 feature update. Click Close.

To Monitor download process, you can monitor PatchDownloader.log located in the %temp% folder while downloading the update.

Deploy Windows 11 22H2 Upgrade

Once download process is completed, we need to deploy the update. You can deploy the feature update to a single client or to multiple devices using device collection.

Go to Software Library\Overview\Windows Servicing\All Windows Feature Update. Right-Click on a Windows 11 (business editions), version 22H2 en-us x64, and select Deploy. In the next step, you will get the screen called specify general information for this deployment.

On General page, enter the below details for Windows 11 22H2 feature update and Click Next to continue.
         Deployment Name – Windows 11 22H2 Feature Update.
         Description – upgrade deployment for Windows 11 22H2.
         Software update/software update group – No need to select again. its already selected.
         Collection – Click browse button and select a device collection.

On deployment settings page, you have to select the type of deployment. Select as available. Select State Message Level as Only Success and Error Messages and click Next to continue.

On Scheduling page, provide schedule details for the deployment. Click Next to continue.
         Schedule Evaluation – Time Based on: set as Client Local Time.
         Software Available Time – As soon as possible. If you want to make the Windows 11 22H2 upgrade available at a specific date and time, select Specific time and define them. Define the deadline installation to ensure the upgrade happens in the defined period.

On User Experience page, you have to specify the user experience for this Windows 11 22H2 upgrade deployment.

On User Notifications page, set as Display in Software Center and show all notifications
        Deadline behavior – Under the Deadline behavior option leave the options as unselected.
        Device restart behavior – Under the device restart behavior option leave the options as unselected.
        Commit changes at the deadline or during a maintenance window (requires restarts) – Select Yes.
        Software update deployment re-evaluation behavior upon restart If any update in this deployment requires a system restart, run updates deployment evaluation cycle after restart, Select this option and Click Next.

On alerts page, specify software update alert option as default alert configuration for Windows 11 22H2 feature update deployment. Leave all the options as unselected and click Next.

On Download settings page,
        Client use distribution points from neighbor boundary – Select deployment options as do not install software updates
        Software updates is not available in current or neighor boundary group the client can use the distribution point from default site boundary group – choose download and install software updates from the distribution points in site default boundary group.

On Summary page, review the deployment settings of Windows 11 version 22H2 update and click Next. On the Completion window, click Close.

End-User experience 

  • Launch Software Center> Updates and you will be able to see targeted Feature Update with status marked as Available
  • You will get the message “Confirm you want to upgrade the operating system on this computer”, click on Install to initiate the process. Allow some time to get the feature update installed.
  • Once the installation is completed, you will receive a message Restart your computer, click on OK to initiate reboot and update windows.
  • The system will go through configuring update and the process will take some time.
  • Once the update is completed, you will see the login window and logon to the system and run winver on run dialog box. the system will be updated to Version 22H2.

Windows 11 22H2 Upgrade troubleshooting logs

          Please verify the below logs for windows upgrade troubleshooting.

C:\WINDOWS\PANTHER\setupact.log – Contains information about setup actions during the installation.
C:\WINDOWS\PANTHER\setuperr.log – Contains information about setup errors during the installation.
C:\WINDOWS\PANTHER\miglog.xml – Contains information about the user directory structure. This information includes security identifiers (SIDs).
C:\WINDOWS\INF\setupapi.dev.log – Contains information about Plug and Play devices and driver installation.
C:\WINDOWS\INF\setupapi.app.log – Contains information about application installation.
C:\WINDOWS\Panther\PostGatherPnPList.log – Contains information about the capture of devices that are on the system after the online configuration phase.
C:\WINDOWS\Panther\PreGatherPnPList.log – Contains information about the initial capture of devices that are on the system during the downlevel phase.
C:\WINDOWS\Performance\Winsat\winsat.log – Contains information about the Windows System Assessment Tool performance testing results.
