Upgrade to Windows 10: ConfigMgr Task Sequence

This post will detail how to upgrade a Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 machine to Windows 10 using a task sequence in ConfigMgr 2012 R2 SP1. First, you must download a template task sequence from Microsoft, which can be found here: https://blogs.technet.com/cfs-filesystemfile.ashx/__key/telligent-evolution-components-attachments/01-6965-00-00-03-65-10-29/Windows10Upgrade1506.zip. Extract the contents and copy it to your content share.

Create Task Sequence

First, you must extract a Windows 10 ISO into the empty “Windows vNext Upgrade Media” folder contained in the “Windows vNext Upgrade_files” folder on your content share. Next, open your ConfigMgr console and go to Task Sequences. Import the zip “Windows vNext Upgrade.zip” using the Import Task Sequence button in the ribbon.

This import will also create two packages, one of the media that you copied in, and one for scripts. You will need to distribute these two packages to your distribution points. You rename the task sequence to something other than “Windows vNext”, as Windows 10 is no longer considered vNext.

You are now ready to deploy your upgrade. Do not make it available to PXE or boot media, as it must be launched from within Windows.
