1. Microsoft Exchange Update: Rejecting Emails with Multiple “From” Addresses Without a Sender Header Update
Overview
Exchange Online has transitioned to rigorous enforcement of RFC 5322 compliance, particularly in relation to the structural semantics of message headers. Specifically, emails containing multiple “From” fields without an accompanying “Sender” field will be programmatically rejected. This change reflects a move toward higher-fidelity message parsing and unambiguous author attribution which is crucial in federated, secure messaging ecosystems.
Government-specific cloud frameworks i.e. GCC High, DoD, will observe a delayed enforcement as its date is October 7, 2025. This allows for extended alignment with policy and compliance mandates. Notably, high volume senders of such malformed messages will temporarily get excluded from enforcement to facilitate an adaptive compliance window.
Impact
Emails with multiple “From” addresses, if they miss the required “Sender” header, will get blocked. This is important, especially for organizations sending bulk, automated emails, as any failure to update these settings may cause deliverability issues. This policy will only affect Exchange Online users. There will be a temporary grace period for certain tenants though.
Action Needed
If your organization uses multiple “From” addresses in emails, please make sure each of your messages includes a valid Sender header to avoid future rejections.
