Cross Tenant SharePoint Migration Services

When your organization shifts to another tenant, through a merger, divestiture, or consolidation, SharePoint doesn’t migrate itself.

Sites break. Permissions drop. Version history vanishes. End users lose access overnight.

Cross-tenant SharePoint migration is one of the most technically demanding moves in the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. We handle it end-to-end.

When Your Organization Needs to Move Between Tenants

You need a cross-tenant SharePoint migration when:

  • Two companies merge and operate under a single Microsoft 365 tenant
  • A business unit is divested and must move to an independent SharePoint Online Tenant
  • IT consolidation requires collapsing multiple tenants into one destination tenant
  • A rebrand changes your domain and forces a new tenant setup
  • Compliance mandates require data to live in a separate, clean environment

Each scenario carries its own permission dependencies, Microsoft 365 Groups, group-connected sites, and identity conflicts that compound fast.

What Lives in Your Source SharePoint Tenant

Before anything moves, you need a complete picture of what exists.

Content & Structure

Document libraries, site collections, SharePoint Online site hierarchies, pages, and existing configurations all need to move, with their structure intact at the destination tenant.

Metadata & Version History

Files without a version history are incomplete records. Metadata, timestamps, and version history must follow every document to the new tenant.

Permissions & Identity

SharePoint permissions, user accounts, access control settings, Microsoft 365 Groups, and group-connected sites are the most fragile parts of any migration project. One mismap, and your end users hit access walls on day one.

Functionality

Web parts, sharing links, and workflows tied to your source SharePoint sites don't transfer automatically. Each needs individual attention before cutover.

The Complexities Nobody Warns You About

SharePoint cross-tenant migration has layers most teams don’t see until it’s too late.

Identity doesn't follow content

User accounts in the source tenant don't exist in the destination tenant. Without a properly built identity mapping file, typically a CSV file mapping source to target users, permissions break completely. The destination environment sees no recognized identities.

Microsoft's native migration feature has limits

The built-in migration feature covers standard scenarios. It doesn't cover everything. Group-connected sites, certain web parts, sharing links, and complex SharePoint permissions often require a third-party tool to migrate cleanly.

Read-only mode disrupts real work

During active migration windows, sites enter read-only mode. Without proper scheduling, this hits end users during business hours and kills productivity.

Compatibility status issues block migration

TargetsiteUrl conflicts, incompatible site content types, and compatibility status mismatches between source and target environments can stall a migration project entirely if not caught in pre-migration checks.

Service encryption requirements

If your source environment uses Microsoft Purview Customer Key or other service encryption, those configurations need deliberate handling before SharePoint data moves to the new tenant. Miss this and you're looking at data integrity failures post-migration.

Move Everything. Lose Nothing.

Number 1 PNG

Pre-Migration Assessment

We audit the source environment completely. Site collections, document libraries, Microsoft 365 Groups, user accounts, appropriate licenses, and compatibility status, all mapped before a single file moves.

Number 2 PNG

Identity & Permissions Mapping

We audit the source environment completely. Site collections, document libraries, Microsoft 365 Groups, user accounts, appropriate licenses, and compatibility status, all mapped before a single file moves.

Number 3 PNG

Phased Migration Execution

We migrate SharePoint Online content in structured phases, not one bulk move. Incremental migrations reduce downtime, allow validation between phases, and protect SharePoint data integrity throughout. Where Microsoft’s native migration feature falls short, we bring in the right third-party tool.

Number 4 PNG

Validation at the Destination Tenant

Before users are cut over, we verify site content, version history, web parts, sharing links, and source and target permission alignment. Migration reports and detailed reports are reviewed at every checkpoint. Compatibility status is confirmed on all migrated sites.

Post Migration Steps

After cutover, we verify end user access, decommission source SharePoint sites on schedule, and deliver a complete migration checklist confirming everything that moved. The user experience at the new tenant is confirmed functional before we close the migration project.

How We Execute the Migration

What We Protect Through Every Phase

Cross-tenant migration risks are real.

Here’s what we keep intact:

  • SharePoint data integrity from source to destination environment
  • Version history on every document, nothing stripped
  • Microsoft 365 Groups and their connected site structures
  • Access control continuity so end users never hit permission gaps
  • Site Pages and web parts rendered correctly in the destination tenant
  • Sharing links preserved or remapped where required
  • Business operations-related migrations are scheduled to minimize real-time disruption

The goal is a destination tenant that works exactly as your source SharePoint tenant did, with better structure and a clean foundation.

Every day your migration sits incomplete, your teams are split across two environments. SharePoint Online sites that should be unified are fragmented.

Permissions that should be clean are patched. Version history that should be accessible is stuck in a source tenant nobody should still be using.

This is fixable. And it doesn’t have to be painful.
