Converting a Regular Mailbox to a Shared Mailbox in a Hybrid Environment

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]One question that always comes up during On-Prem to Exchange Online is how to handle shared mailboxes in a hybrid environment.  In EXO, when you convert a regular mailbox to a shared mailbox, that change will not write back to the on-prem environment.  The hybrid server will still see the mailbox as a regular mailbox.

After you convert the regular mailbox to shared, you must edit the attributes of the on-premises object in Active Directory Users & computers.  There are 2 settings you must edit; msExchRecipientTypeDetails & msExchangeRemoteRecipientType.

The 2 attributes need the following values

  • msExchRemoteRecipientType: 100
  • msExchRecipientTypeDetails: 34359738368

After you make these changes, you can remove the Office 365 License.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
