ConfigMgr Secondary Site SQL Access Error

I ran across a weird error this week when installing a secondary site in my ConfigMgr environment. Starting with SQL Server 2012, the local system account does not have sysadmin rights to your SQL Server instance. This is required when installing a secondary site, as the site setup runs as the system account. You’ll know you’re having this problem because the prerequisite check will fail with an error that says something like this:

Either the user account running Configuration Manager Setup does not have sysadmin SQL Server role permission on the SQL Server instance selected for site database installation, or the SQL Server instance could not be contacted to verify permissions. Setup cannot continue.

To fix this, open SQL Server Management Studio and connect to your database server and instance. Expand Security > Logins. Right-click on “NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM” and select Properties. On the “Server Roles” node, check the box for sysadmin.

The prerequisite checker should no longer fail on this step.
